Implants
About Implants
The art of implant dentistry has developed over very many years and now Implants
are scientifically proven, as a safe and reliable means of replacing absent
teeth.
Implants are titanium fixings which are placed in the mouth to replace the roots of lost or missing teeth. Use of the latest technology means our implants are treated with a biocompatible coating of titanium dioxide. This coating causes the implant to form a bond with human bone and create a unique interface, in short, this biocompatibility allows for ‘osseointegration’ or fusion of implant to bone. This allows us as dentists to replace teeth without drilling or compromising the other teeth in your mouth.
Aging
When teeth are lost from the mouth bone is lost with them and this bone loss
can cause patients mouths to look older than they are. Early tooth loss in
life will accelerate aging and the changes in the facial tissues often associated
with aging become apparent. Whether implants are used to replace missing teeth
or to retain and stabilize removable dentures they will also help maintain
the jaw bones preventing further deterioration and bone loss.
Reasons for Implants
Replace a missing tooth
In the unfortunate event of losing a tooth, for whatever reason, the options
for replacement can, in the case of bridges, unfortunately involve compromising
other teeth in the mouth. This compromise can result in further loss of teeth.
Implant placement can mean that no further damage is done to any other teeth
in the mouth, and returning your smile and function.
Replacing multiple teeth
When bridge work does fail it can often mean more than one tooth space is
left and cannot be re bridged leaving the patient with the only option of
a removable appliance (a denture). Implants can be used to replace the original
missing tooth and any tooth subsequently lost due to the bridge failing. Where
three or four teeth are lost in some cases, fewer implants can be used to
replace more teeth in the form of an implant supported bridge.
Denture stabilisation
Even the best dentures in the world will always move! And the worst dentures
(usually the lower ones) will move a lot. Denture stabilisation with implants
can be a life changing experience. For those people who have lost all their
teeth, 2 or 4 implants can give them a new lease of life, allowing them to
chew and talk with confidence.
